World Bank officials are evaluating various infrastructure
projects in Mumbai and also met several senior officials to thoroughly understand
the ‘sustainable development’ initiatives of the state government.
Inger Anderson, vice president for sustainable development
at World Bank (WB), along with Hubert Nove-Josserand, operations advisor for
India with WB, met senior officials and planners at the Mumbai Metropolitan
Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and the state chief secretary.
The agenda of the WB officials in the country is to meet and
discuss with officials various ways in which WB can associate with
sustainable development projects.
Recently, the media had reported about World Bank President
Robert Zoellick meeting India’s minister of state for environment and forests, Jairam
Ramesh, to discuss the country’s environment conservation initiatives.
It was reported that the WB had decided on supporting the
government’s various environment management and protection programmes including
the integrated coastal zone management project, the industrial pollution management
project, and the national Ganga project.
WB is also looking at partnering India for strengthening of
pollution control boards and biodiversity conservation.
