DP World India has been conferred with the Green Practices Award at the Manufacturing Supply Chain Awards, in recognition of the various environmentally-friendly and sustainable initiatives undertaken by the company. DP World is a global logistics company and was given this recognition during the Manufacturing Supply Chain Summit held in Mumbai.
In India, DP World has invested in a variety of green initiatives that include rainwater and greywater harvesting, implementation of solar-powered water-pumping systems, installation of solar panels at its terminals and local schools, and installation of solar street lamps in local villages. Through its ‘Trees for Life’ programme, the company has invested in the education of farmers on a sustainable land-use system that maintains and increases total yields by combining food crops with tree crops on the same unit of land. Over 31,000 saplings have been planted by the company to date, apparently with 100 per cent survival rate.
On energy and reducing carbon footprint, DP World has installed and operates electronic rubber-tired gantries (eRTG) at port terminals, as well as electrical vehicles at its facilities. It is also trying to make supply chains more energy-efficient by promoting alternate modes of transportation including rail, coastal shipping and inland waterways.
CB’s questions on what kind of audits and assessment were done by the award committee and the reduction in carbon emissions, energy usage and waste generated were left unanswered by the company.
In a press release shared with CB, Rizwan Soomar, CEO and MD, DP World Subcontinent, said, ‘It is a proud moment for us to win this prestigious award as it recognises our efforts to create an environmentally friendly and sustainable supply-chain ecosystem in the country. Through our capabilities in port terminals, rail services, inland rail terminals, warehousing, 3PL, express and cold chain services, we give our customers more options to move their cargo in a smarter, faster and efficient manner.’
