To spread awareness about environment conservation and help
curb air, water and soil pollution in every village of Maharashtra, the state’s
rural development minister Jayant Patil will initiate a plan that will be
introduced within the next year.

Addressing a press conference on September 28, Patil said, ‘We
have asked the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) to suggest
consultants who would guide us in preparation and implementation of the
initiative.’

A thorough study will be carried out to
find out pollution levels in the villages. Based on the findings and
recommendations of the study, the environment plan will be prepared and implemented
within the next year.

Patil said that to make the plan effective, the
implementation will be undertaken in phases. In the initial stages, a cluster
will be formed of most polluted villages (with a population of more than
10,000) in every district.

‘Within a period of two years, the plan will be taken for
implementation in every village. In the first phase, the initiative will be
implemented at Pune, Kolhapur, Thane and Raigarh districts,’ said Patil.

It may be noted that the prime minister during his scheduled
visit to Nandurbar district in Maharashtra is expected to plant the 55,000,000th
plant under the eco-village programme.
