Goa Bachao Abhiyan (GBA), a civic NGO, will launch a protest on June 10 to highlight the failure of the government of its commitment to the people concerning sensitive issues.
At a press briefing, GBA Convenor Sabina Martins informed that the protest ‘Stand Up, Form a Chain in the Rain’ would also insist to accomplish the long-pending demands of the people.
“One of the major issues is the Regional Plan (RP) deadlines wherein chief minister (Digambar Kamat) had on March 4 assured it would be out within six months and that it will update RP 2021 every fortnight. But it has not sustained to its promise,” she lamented.
The toll-free number in the much touted flying squads do not respond to calls after working hours, was the further grievance of the NGO members. The government had placed the system in motion on May 24 after a demand from the GBA to ensure that no approvals are granted in eco-sensitive zones in Goa.
“The toll-free number is not functional after working hours and has been left toothless with no powers to file FIR’s against offenders,” Martins remarked.
The NGO also brought to the notice the government’s failure in fulfilling promises of halting the rampant illegal mining, hill cutting and filing of fields across major portions of the state. “The violations continue… The government has instead notified a ‘committee for review’ of construction on ‘eco-zones’ based on the RP 2001 with no mention of freezing construction” she said.
