To create environment awareness among students so that they can, in turn, create awareness in the society at large, Jharkhand State Pollution Control Board has come up with a ‘Green School’ project in government schools.
Considering that deforestation is one of the major causes for rise in pollution and change in global climate, the state pollution control board has come up with this idea to initiate and take a first step towards forestation.
Under the programme, each student will plant at least one sapling and take care of it. Each student will be graded on the basis of the plant’s health – the healthiest plant would get its carer the highest marks. The marks obtained will be added in their regular report card.
Although various schools have already experimented with ‘eco clubs’, Green Schools seem promising as it has been made a part of the regular curriculum and a student’s ‘environmental performance’ will be shown on her academics’ report card.
Letters to all schools have been issued, carrying the directives of the project, and the project will begin after a list of schools in each district is prepared.
