Crompton Greaves (CG) has started witnessing the change it
had expected to see through its corporate social responsibility (CSR)
programmes. The company claimed the same in a press release while commemorating
the completion of seven years of its CSR programmes in areas around its factory
in Kanjurmarg, Mumbai.
The company’s CSR programmes, implemented through its
partner non-government organizations include computer literacy, women’s training
in entrepreneurship, handicraft, educational scholarships and tree plantation.
The company claims that its flagship CSR programme, which
was the renovation of school building and subsequent support in the form of
school teachers and free tuition, has increased the attendance of children in
schools as well as the quality of education in the area. The school with English as a medium of
instruction runs classes up to sixth standard.
‘CG takes its
corporate social responsibility seriously and its employees and management
together play an active role. We currently have three major focus areas namely
community outreach, education and skill development. We thank our NGO partners
and people of Kanjurmarg who have helped us succeed in all our CSR efforts and
given us great personal fulfillment too, read statement by Sanjay Jorapur who
is CG’s executive vice president and global head – human resource.
Under education assistance programmes from the company, 52
students received scholarships, and 50 students received college fee
assistance. Also, students who received vocational and technical training are
now pursuing diploma in civil engineering, fashion designing, and auto mechanics
and some are working in the banking and insurance sector.
Girls who had dropped out of the schools had been sponsored
for nursing courses and are already employed or are undergoing internship at a
local hospital. Once underprivileged, some women of the village have formed
self-help groups and run their own business enterprises that give them sustainable
income.
