Delegate bags going to underprivileged school children, paper use being minimized by using digital mediums, CNG-run group transport for commuting, customized gifts made by tribal craftsmen for delegates, and use of recycled wood, carpets made of recycled material and CFL or LED bulbs… many such measures make this year’s Petrotech a ‘responsible’ event.
Petrotech began on November 1 and is expected to find solutions for ‘greening’ of an industry that is often seen as a major contributor to pollution. Over 4,000 professionals from related sectors will be brainstorming at the event.
While inaugurating the event, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh hoped that new ideas will emerge from the discussions in the collective pursuit of energy security.
‘Hydrocarbon will continue to be the major source of energy in the coming two to three decades, and the hydrocarbon requirement will have to be met through imports. In Indian context the requirement is slated to increase by 40 per cent in next 10 years, while our own production will increase by 10 per cent. Therefore, all national oil companies are mandated to also pursue equity oil from overseas oil-producing countries,’ said Singh.
The event is organized by ONGC, with the oil ministry as the primary sponsor, and its mapping for carbon emissions is being done by Deloitte.
As a mark of India’s growing importance in the oil market, Russia, Malaysia, Canada, China, Kazakhstan, Qatar, Holland, Denmark, UAE and Indonesia are among the nearly 200 international exhibitors and participants.
