Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) spent
Rs 12.70 crore on various corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities during
2009-10. This is a quantum jump in the amount allocated for CSR, considering
that MRPL in 2008-09 spent Rs 3.69 crore on such activities.

The Kuthethur-based
refinery has spent two crore rupees on CSR in the first six months of the
current fiscal, with many initiatives still on the cards.

‘The company is primarily focusing on education and creation
of basic infrastructure for the rehabilitation of project displaced families.
Relevance and adequacy of projects suggested to the CSR department is evaluated
before taking the project forward,’ Lekshmi M Kumaran, deputy general manager,
corporate communications and CSR, MRPL, said in a statement to the media.

MRPL has also responded with contribution in cash and kind
whenever the state has faced major natural calamities. The company contributed
Rs 4.95 crore for construction of 330 houses at Devadurga taluk of Raichur
district and contributed Rs 50 lakh to Chief Minister Calamity Relief Fund.
