‘It is sad to hear that
female foeticide is still going on in the country. There is still a disparity
between the genders and the only way we can empower the girls is by way of
education,’ said veteran actress and human rights activist Shabana Azmi while
releasing a report The State of the girl
child in India 2010 in Delhi on Septemer 23.
‘Apart from education, women
need a secure atmosphere to grow and prosper,’ she added.
‘I have gone through the
textbooks across India, and it is amazing to see that every time when a question
like “where is mother” is asked, the reply is that the mother is in kitchen. On
the other hand, when it is asked “where is father”, the reply is that the father
is in the office,’ said Azmi.
The event, organized by Plan India, also saw the
release of Voices of Change: Extraordinary Stories of Girls, a collection of true life stories of
eighteen girls.
