In an effort to propagate responsible, sustainable and green consumption, about 30 companies have come together and formed a group called ‘The Green People of India’.

‘Organic producers/brands have a tough time competing with larger brands in the marketplace. Also, not many people are aware of the benefits of organic products or the damage that non-organic products cause to farmers as well as the environment. By coming together, the Green People of India can educate people and increase awareness about their products, thereby providing social and economic benefits to the farmer communities,’ said Shishir Goenka, co- founder, The Green People of India, in an email to CauseBecause.

‘It has been a great privilege to be a part of this coming together of green minds from different corners of India in a record time of three weeks. We launched the Green People of India with a bang in our fourth week with our flagship event, The Green People Festival. It was a celebration of the collective energy and enthusiasm of some very talented and passionate organic, ethical, fair trade and sustainable enterprises. We hope to keep this momentum going and strive for bigger, better and more creative ways of reaching out to fellow Indians with our cause, concept and green stories,’ stated Nidhi Singh, joint promotion campaign and festival director, The Green People of India.

As an advocate of reusable and green products, Hindi movies actor Kalki Koechlin endorsed the idea of The Green People of India and became a fellow of the group.

A press release from the Group read: ‘In the past few years there has been growing awareness among our fellow Indians about climate change, pollution, the need for an organic, green-conscious lifestyle and also about various green enterprises, who have been working in their own little nooks and workshops creating green and sustainable products and services.

‘You are reading this press release because of an email revolution that happened in the first week of May 2013. It started with 1 email and 25 recipients cc’d in. In 13 days there were more than 100 green enterprises cc’d into the conversation and everyone wanted the same thing. More awareness!

‘It doesn’t help any of us to be in our own little isolated corner, sweating it out to save the world. We have all the energy, enthusiasm and passion to make a difference, but the resources we have are always used up to further our cause, concept and work. So we decided to come together and form a friendly group of like-minded people. We even came up with a self-explanatory tagline – Promoting Eco-enterprises and Sustainable Development in India’.
