Tata Steel BSL recently launched a six-month campaign called ‘Save Water’ at its Sahibabad plant in Ghaziabad district of Uttar Pradesh, so as to sensitise the local community and school children. As part of the campaign, volunteers are interacting with the community and students in local schools and sharing various methods of water conservation, rainwater harvesting, best practices on efficient use of water, etc. Delhi-based NGO United Way Delhi is supporting the inaugural campaign.
Starting with about 1,000 students from 4 schools, the campaign will eventually cover around 15 schools and the community around Sahibabad. Rajeev Singhal, managing director, Tata Steel BSL, formally launched the campaign by flagging off a bus branded with messages on Save Water, with volunteers on board who went around the area to raise awareness on this issue. Sahi Baag, a park developed by the company with the Save Water theme, was also inaugurated by Utsav Sharma, regional officer, UP Pollution Control Board, Ghaziabad, and Rajeev Singhal. Developed as part of the company’s sustainable CSR initiatives and located near its plant, the park, with an area of 4,125 sq metres, has about 3,000 plants of 8 varieties and will work as a green zone for the area and a place for locals to unwind at. The park also has an installation made of stones, recycled iron frames, and earthen pots with structures depicting how all living beings are dependent on water and the importance of its conservation.
Speaking on the occasion, Rajeev Singhal said, ‘Efficient management of a precious resource like water, particularly in urban landscape, is extremely critical and this campaign aims to create more awareness on water conservation to effect behavioural changes both among our employees and the community including school children.’
CB’s questions on whether the company will help implement water management and conservation projects, and reach and impact of the project were left unanswered by the company.
