The Indian Beauty and Hygiene Association (IBHA) undertook a unique Zero-Waste Sachet Recycling pilot project and collected about 600 kilograms of sachet waste in Mumbai in 2014. The waste will be recycled to produce oil and carbon.

‘This project is a first for the industry in looking at ways to reduce our carbon footprint and tackle the menace of plastic sachet waste. In sync with Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, IBHA as a group was determined to be a first mover in looking at sustainable and innovative solutions to recycle flexi plastic waste,’ said Dinesh Dayal, president, IBHA.   IBHA has tied up with Stree Mukti Sanghatana(SMS), who work with women ragpickers for collecting multi-layer flexible plastic waste like sachets and food packets.

At present, about 200 ragpickers help in collecting flexible plastic waste from 26 wards in Mumbai, which is nearly 50 per cent of Mumbai. IBHA is in talks with Bombay Municipal Corporation (BMC) to cover the rest of Mumbai.

IBHA (formerly known as ISTMA) is a national trade association comprising of large companies in the Indian cosmetics and personal care industry. Its members include Hindustan Unilever, L’Oreal India, P&G, Johnson and Johnson, Wipro, Godrej and Marico.
