The annual Tata Mumbai Marathon (TMM) was organised last month by the Tata Group and United Way of Mumbai (UWM), the event’s philanthropy partner. Started in 2004, funds at this event are raised by participants – corporates, organisations and individuals – to donate to charities and NGOs of their choice. This year the amount raised was Rs 229.16 crore, breaching the Rs 200 crore mark. In all, 262 NGOs, 169 corporates, 266 teams and 231 Young Leaders along with thousands of individual donors and fundraisers supported social causes like education, disability, healthcare, women empowerment, animal welfare and environment. UWM raised over Rs 34.36 crore.
The slogan for 2018 was #BEBETTER. This year, the top six NGOs raised more than Rs 1 crore each. It is claimed that 169 corporates participated and raised Rs 19.47 crore for 98 NGOs. It isn’t clear if Tata Group raised funds and what its role is in organising this event since we didn’t receive any response from the company.
